I had been recovering from drugs for one and a half years when I was evicted from my apartment for non-payment of rent. Of course, I didn t just wake up and decide not to pay my rent and the next day I was put out. I had ample warning before the sheriff s department was scheduled to set all my belongs on the curb. I was unable to find a job in time to stop the process. Being severely depressed I woke up on September 2, 2009 and left my apartment and all my valuables behind. The sheriff s department came as scheduled. According to my family and neighbors all my belongings were set out on the curb.

For about a week after the setout, I managed to stay in hotels with my sixteen year old daughter, who is hearing impaired. Eventually, the money ran out. I sent my daughter to stay with family so she would not have to stay on the street with me. I tried staying at nursing homes and White Castles most of the time, but showering was impossible.

Living from pillar to post was not working out. I now knew I must

consider going to a homeless shelter. All of what I had heard about shelters and sleeping in a big room full of cots and strangers was dancing in my head.

I was afraid but the streets were scaring me more by this time. The fear got the best of me. I was referred to the C.A.P. line for help. I called 381-SAFE to be referred to a shelter. Since my daughter was not with me, I only had two shelter choices. The first was the Drop Inn Center, the second was Bethany House. Fortunately, Bethany House had a bed available for a woman without children with her.

September 23, 2009, I walked into the shelter only to learn I wasn t walking into a big room with lots of cots, but it was a big beautiful, clean house. The staff person who greeted me took me through the intake process. She introduced me to the other staff and guests. Then she showed me to my room. Basically, she made me feel comfortable in my new home , as all of the BHS staff did. Later that evening I was called down for dinner.

The meal was lamb, rice, beans, greens and corn bread!!!
