Help in the Nick of Time
When LaQueita’s mother passed, she was not impressed with the funeral industry. So even with children at home and one already in college, she embarked on a mortuary science degree with cremation certificate.
She graduated in July of 2024, but quickly found herself behind on rent. Her education money was gone, and she had only $525/month from public benefits since she didn’t have a job yet. Her landlord threatened eviction.
Luckily, just as LaQueita was getting desperate, she received a phone call from Bethany House. Bethany House’s new Impact Award Program, which uses predictive analytics to reach out to people at risk of homelessness, showed that LaQueita might need help—and we were right!
“This phone call came out of nowhere, but at just the right time!” LaQueita said.
Things quickly started to improve for LaQuieta. Through Bethany House and other community partners, she got the eviction dismissed, received rental assistance, improved her resume, started counseling, and found summer childcare for her children.
She found a job transporting transplant organs (started on May 8th!) and got a new apartment. She had enough money to pay first month’s rent but not the security deposit–so Bethany House helped her negotiate terms with the new landlord.
LaQueita’s philosophy for life is this: “You can do anything but quit!”
Bethany House admires LaQueita’s perseverance and fortitude and wishes her and her children only blue skies ahead. It took a village, but homelessness prevention is always worth the effort.
