Danasia’s Determination
Four years ago, during the COVID pandemic, Danasia moved back to Cincinnati from Dallas with her 3-month-old baby. The housing market was tight, and rents had gotten much higher. She struggled to find a safe and suitable place for herself and an infant.
Danasia bounced from friend to friend but that was very difficult on everyone with a baby in the mix. She reached out to Bethany House. Because she was registered for nursing school, she qualified for the Shelter Diversion program, whose sole purpose is to help people avoid shelter.
Because of Bethany House’s relationship with landlords, Danasia’s case manager quickly helped her find an apartment. As a full-time student and parent, it was difficult for Danasia to keep up with her bills. But through the Diversion program, Danasia qualified for rental assistance which alleviated some financial pressure while she worked on her degree.
After six months, Danasia graduated from our program and received a Housing Choice voucher, further stabilizing her housing situation and enabling her to finish her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) degree.
Danasia reflects that the most difficult part of her housing process was dealing with the stereotypes landlords have of single mothers using vouchers. She told her landlord, “All people are different. Give people a chance to surprise you!”
Danasia knows that things could have turned out very differently if not for Bethany House and her case worker. She shares, “I love these people! What a blessing!”
Danasia’s story is far from over. She is now a Registered Nurse (RN) and looking to buy her first home. We look forward to seeing what comes next!
