Brunch & Backpacks

Autumn is a favorite season for many, often because of back-to-school memories. However, for families experiencing homelessness, back-to-school can be a big source of stress. Ideally, when families come to the shelter, the children can remain in their previous schools, but that is not always possible.

Bethany House’s Family Services Department (FSD) works tirelessly to alleviate this stress by leading the charge on all things academic. With roughly 100 children living in shelter, there is much to coordinate:

  • Admisions and registration
  • Transportation
  • Uniforms
  • School supplies
  • After-school programming
  • Tutoring

This year, FSD also hosted a Back-To-School Brunch with an informative presentation in the cafeteria to help parents prepare for and prioritize school. Each child received a new backpack stuffed with school supplies.

Special thanks to LEM Products, Christ Emmanuel Christian Fellowship, Rainmaker Resources, Roohi Karofa, and Robin Corr for their generous donations, and to all the volunteers who helped prepare the backpacks and brunch.
